A new app has launched that will allow you to capture your children’s school excursions in the background of their everyday life.
The adventure-based photo app Kinect Adventures has been created by British parent and adventure enthusiast James Taylor and will be available to download for free from the App Store later this month.
Mr Taylor, who is based in Wales, has been a Kinect user for more than 30 years and said he was inspired by the technology’s ability to capture images of what he sees as a very human activity.
“When I was a kid, I was constantly in the dark about what was going on in the world around me, and that’s what this app is going to change,” Mr Taylor told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme.
“The fact that you can take these photographs in the night sky and put them on the app and then have them be used as your personal adventure is going be a game-changer.”
Mr Taylor said the app had received “really positive reviews” from parents.
“It’s not a very well known thing in the industry, and people are very passionate about it and it’s something that I’m hoping will be a great platform for families and kids in the future,” he said.
“I think the more families that use this app, the more they will realise it can be a really good way to capture their kids in different environments and in different circumstances.”
How to start?
The app is very simple to use, although you’ll need to know the basics of Kinect and be able to navigate to the ‘about’ section on the website.
It’s best used in the evening, when the sun is shining and there is less light pollution.
To set up your Kinect adventure, tap ‘Start’ and select ‘App’ in the menu bar.
This will bring up a screen showing you the settings you’ll be able see.
From there you can choose whether you want to start in the day, in the afternoon, or at night.
“Kinect Adventures are very simple.
They’re all set to take pictures and they’re very simple,” Mr Williams said.
After you select the time zone, you will then be given a timer that tells you when you’ll have enough time to take your pictures.
Once you’ve selected your settings, the app will show you a ‘Time of Day’ menu with options to take photos in the morning, evening, or in the dusk.
Once the timer is running, you’ll then be asked to choose your location.
“If you’re at home you can simply tap ‘Ok’, and then the camera will be in the appropriate location,” Mr Harris said.
The app also features a ‘Capture Location’ section, where you can create a list of the locations you want the app to take images of, and the app also has a ‘Take Photo’ option.
You can set up the app as a timer and set the number of times that the app needs to take the images, but Mr Williams says it’s best to set it as a timed action, and then manually take the photos.
“We have this little timer that starts the timer,” Mr Turner said.
Mr Harris explained how to set up a time to start the app, and how to choose the right setting for the photos to be taken.
“Once you’ve got your camera set up, the timer goes off, and it’ll show you your camera’s location.
You’ve got to set the timer up so that you’ve done it, and you’ve then got to wait for the timer to finish.
And then you can then get your camera out.”
After you’ve waited for the camera to finish, Mr Turner added, you can go to the next step.
“You can now go into the camera menu, and select the ‘take photo’, and when you’ve finished the timer, the camera’s in the proper location.”
The app will then give you a timer to record the images for you to use as a ‘time of day’ app.
“And so you’ll just get these three steps,” Mr Anderson said.
Kinect’s launch has been hailed as a breakthrough for the technology, but it will not be the only app that uses the technology in the coming months.
In August, Kinect is set to launch an augmented reality app called Kinect Smart that is based on the company’s technology.
